SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

Mrs B. Kelly (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator)

At St. Benedict’s College we believe that all of our pupils should experience success.

Pupils who are experiencing learning difficulties are assessed by the college or by external agencies and are assigned to ability groupings to facilitate appropriate teaching and learning. Thus the subject teacher develops a greater awareness of the learning difficulties experienced by each pupil and caters for his/her individual education.

Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, Literacy and Numeracy Co-ordinators, Learning Support Assistants and the School Nurse make a significant contribution to pupils’ needs.

The Reading Buddy Scheme involving Year 12 pupils is proving to be a very effective way of improving literacy. Partnership with parents is also very important in helping these children.

We continually strive to ensure that no pupil, deemed to have learning difficulties, leaves mainstream schooling without a sound knowledge of the key skills in English, Mathematics and ICT.

Lifts and a disabled toilet have been installed for wheelchair users. St. Benedict’s College warmly welcomes the Special Educational Needs and Disability Order.
