The Junior Apprentice

The Braid Ballymena and Ballymena Town Centre

Thursday 13th June 2019

Michelin Tyre PLC has been part of the local community for over 50 years, and as part of our legacy is committed to ensure this community continues to thrive through the support of Michelin Development Ltd.

Working with local Councils and Enterprise Agencies, Invest NI and the Ulster Bank we are supporting small and medium size enterprises to grow and create new jobs, as well as attract major investors into the local Ballymena area.

Longer term sustainability of economic growth will depend on future generations taking up the challenge of running a business in a fast-changing modern world. To encourage this Michelin Development Ltd, along with Young Enterprise NI and Ballymena Business Centre, hosted the Junior Apprentice in Ballymena on Thursday 13th June 2019. The competition gave 4 young people from 8 of the post primary schools in the Ballymena Learning Together group with an aptitude for running a business, the opportunity to develop their skills and experience in strategizing, team working, negotiating, purchasing and presenting in a real-life situation.

The school groups were given £150 to purchase a number of items from the list provided - all items were retained by the school after the event. Each school group was supported and mentored by a local business person during the day and the local shops in Ballymena were very supportive to the young people. £1200 was spent in the local shops with negotiating by the students providing a saving of over £400.

Thank you to the Mayor, Councillor Maureen Morrow, of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council who both opened the event and presented the awards.
